Phil Yoon initially worked as a hard rock, heavy metal, and pop style drummer, but after studying abroad at Berklee College of Music, he transformed into a jazz drummer. Influenced by senior drummers such as Max Roach and Elvin Jones, he pursues authentic modern jazz styles from bebop to free jazz. He mainly plays rhythmic pieces with complex beats and mixed beats, and is interested in reinterpreting Latin music and Korean folk songs with a modern sensibility. He is characterized by using vintage instruments from the Gretsch brand that were favored by jazz drummers in the 1950s and 1960s.
