Excerpted from Straight Ahead’s second album “New Time,” the track “Medan” is a 3/4 beat song named after a city in Indonesia, composed by trumpeter Kim Ye-joong. The song is based on the Post-Bop style, and features gorgeous, straight-forward playing of the trumpet and tenor saxophone. Straight Ahead presents a more evolved sound in this album, formed by a quintet led by master drummer Phil Yoon and bassist Song Woo-young, with new members.
“Medan” is the result of collaboration between talented musicians leading Korean jazz, and each member’s unique style blends well. Kim Ye-joong’s trumpet performance and Go Ho-jeong’s tenor saxophone performance enhance the song’s emotion and tension.
